Man Puts Baby In Freezer

A Canadian man who couldn't figure out how to deal with his girlfriend's feverish 10-month-old daughter put the baby into a freezer to cool her down. Derrick Hardy faces charges of criminal negligence and assaulting the infant, who was rescued when her mother came home. It was reported that the mother found the girl crammed into the freezer alongside ice cubes and hamburger meat. Hardy said he had left the door ajar but the mother said it had been closed when she returned. He told a court in the eastern province of Prince Edward Island the child had only been in the freezer for about 40 seconds. Hardy, 21, who admitted to police that he had no real parenting skills to deal with a sick child, said he had noticed the girl was very hot and put a cool cloth on her face, but this had no effect.

He then carried the girl outside into the night air but, frustrated that this also did not work and worried she might drown if placed in a cold bath, he put the baby into the kitchen freezer. She was wearing only an undershirt.

A local doctor said the mother had described her baby as "crying, sobbing and terrified." The child spent several days in hospital to recover from first-and-second-degree freezer burns on her head and torso. Hardy has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The baby's grandmother now has custody of the girl.

Student Brings 5-foot Boa To School

A 5-foot-long boa constrictor caught slithering around a middle school had some help getting to class. His owner, a student at Wooddale Middle School, smuggled the reptile in his backpack recently. The student, who was not identified by school officials, was disciplined. Boa constrictors, which squeeze their prey to kill, are not poisonous and the snake was not considered dangerous to students. School officials called police after finding the snake, which was taken to Memphis Animal Services to be reclaimed by the student's parents.

Dog Hops On Bus To Go Pubbing

A dog owner is having to chain his pet to stop him from hopping on to a bus and going to a pub. Gary Kay's terrier Ratty regularly got on the bus on his own to go to the Black Bull pub in York, UK. Ratty made the trip to the pub, where he was fed sausages by a barmaid, twice a week. His outings came to an end when the pub went upmarket and banned animals from the premises. But now Gary says Ratty has found a new local - the Rose And Crown Pub. He believes Ratty has been getting off the bus at the Black Bull on his own, crossing the road and turning up at the Rose and Crown. " I have to chain him because, although he can get to the pub on his own he can't get home from there," said Gary.

Toddler Banned From Travelling

A two-year-old boy was banned from boarding a Turkey-bound flight in the UAE after his name appeared on a list of wanted suspects, a newspaper reported. The news report said that the boy's passport details, including the date of birth, matched those in an arrest warrant. The reason for the mix-up was not known. "While going through the passport checking procedures to get on board, one of the officers on duty said they wanted to take Suhail," the boy's father, Abdullah Mohamed Saleh, said. " I thought he was kidding me and said 'Take him if you want'," he said. "He showed me a print-out of a document that said Suhail was wanted and there was an arrest warrant for him." Officials said they would investigate the incident, the paper reported.
